Our old mantel was a small, narrow piece of wood. At Christmas I could't even hang stocking hangers from it. We decided to build a box over the existing mantel then we added an old hollow core door. To the hollow core door we added some molding and before you knew it the mantel looked like this! Going down the sides are hollow core doors. I bought the corbels at Hobby Lobby on sale half price for $7.00 each and used gold leaf on them as well as the wood fan fixture.All in all with wood scraps we created a beautiful mantel. At Christmas, I put 5 Christmas trees on this mantel. In the middle, a 4 ft tree, then 2, 3 ft trees and lastly 2, 2 ft trees. It looks beautiful.
